The Amazing Palm Computers
WHAT IS THE PALM COMPUTER
The Palm Computer is a real computer that fits in the palm of your hand.
It interfaces with your IBM or Mac computer at home to perform a lot of amazing
tasks.
The computer weighs less than a pound and fits easily in your shirt pocket.
It performs the four main functions of a Day Timers electronically and since you
can carry around this computer with little effort, you may record the events of
your day as they happen on your palm computer and not have to wait until you get
home.
The four main functions are: (1) Phone Book, (2) Expenses, (3) Do-List,
and (4) Memos.
You actually write in the information on the screen of the computer in a simple
language called Grafitti. It takes about an hour to learn it. There is a neat
full sized key board for easier entry. You may set alarms to go off and remind
you of upcoming events. You can tell the To-Do List to repeat tasks daily, weekly,
monthly, yearly. You can see your calendar in year, month, week, or day format.
You can compose letters and transfer them to your computer.
One of the neatest things is that you can connect to your computer once a day and
download all your email to the Palm. Then you may read the mail, answer the mail,
delete the mail, and when you again connect to your computer, it will send out any
email you have written in addition to getting your new email.
Another amazing property is that you can tell the Palm what web pages you want to
see each day and it will download, not only those web pages, but all the reference
pages as well. I have been downloading the front page of the New York Times each
day and it is truely amazing.
You may keep track of your expenses putting them in categories and when you connect,
the Palm will transfer all your information to you computer already itemized in
Excel.
As you can tell, I am truely amazed. I'll be glad to give anyone a demonstration.
Just drop by Capers Hall 226D.
WHAT KIND OF PALM COMPUTER SHOULD YOU BUY
My personal preference is the Handspring Visor.
This Palm Type Computer is made by the inventor of the original Palm Computer and
has a place for a plugin module like a Game Boy. You can buy all sorts of modules
for the Visor. I bought an additional 8mb of memory giving my Visor 16mb of
memory. I can do a lot in this 16mb. If you want to do remote access from the
field, right now you need to buy a Palm VII. But I'm sure the module for the Visor
will be along shortly. Already you can buy a modem module and you just need a phone
jack to be able to call your computer. The Handspring Visor is fairly inexpensive,
costing $259.00 for the 8mb version. The 2mb version is only $179.00
