COURSE DESCRIPTION
This
course will introduce the student to mathematical models of real world
problems. In particular, students will
use graphs, functions, and tables to describe data and use the models to
interpolate and extrapolate. Functions
studied will include linear, quadratic, and exponential. Students will be expected to interpret
results in writing and use technology to solve and display results.
TEXTBOOK: Elementary
Mathematical Modeling: Functions and
Graphs (
CALCULATOR (Required): TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus
GRADING: There will be 4 assigned in-class tests, each
worth 100 points. Daily grades will
account for 150 points. Daily grades
will come from randomly graded homework, special assignments and unannounced
quizzes on homework problems. These
daily points can and will make a difference in your final grade so be serious
about keeping up with your assigned work daily.
Enough daily points will be collected so that some points may be
dropped. There will be a final project assigned which
will be worth 50 points. A comprehensive
final exam will account for 200 points. There
are a total of 800 points that may be earned during the semester. Grades will be assigned according to the
following scale: A= 720 – 800 points, B
= 640 – 719 points, C = 560 – 639
points, D= 480 – 559 points, F= 0 – 479 points.
OTHER INFORMATION: Missing an assigned test without a valid
excuse will result in a grade of zero on that test. Guard duty is not a legitimate excuse for
missing a test. Please notify me in advance if you must miss a test. Do not wait until the next time you are in class to discuss a missed test. Refer to the phone numbers and e-mail
addresses listed to reach me. Make-up
tests will not be given but if a student has a valid excuse (as determined by
the instructor), the missed test grade may be replaced by an average of all
other test scores. Absences and tardies
will be reported daily through CAS. The Citadel policy pertaining to class
attendance will be upheld. No
make-ups on daily grades will be allowed.
No food or drinks (other than water) are
allowed in the classrooms.
Please
do not hesitate to call me at home or e-mail me with your questions and concerns.
