COURSE DESCRIPTION: An introduction to the calculus of polynomials, exponential, and logarithmic functions with an emphasis on applications to business and the life and social sciences.

TEXTBOOK:  Calculus and Its Applications (11th edition) by Goldstein, Lay, Schneider and Asmer, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2007, (ISBN 0-12-191963-6)

CALCULATOR (Required):  TI-83, TI-83 Plus, TI-84 or TI-84 Plus

GRADING:  There will be 4 assigned in-class tests, each worth 100 points.  Daily grades will account for another 125 points.  Daily grades will come from randomly graded homework, special

assignments and unannounced quizzes on homework problems.  These daily points can and will make a difference in your final grade so be serious about keeping up with your assigned work daily.  Enough daily points will be collected so that some extra points will be available.   A comprehensive final exam will account for 175 points.  There will be a total of 700 points that may be earned during the semester.  Final grades will be determined as follows:  A= 630 – 700 points, B = 560 – 629 points, C = 490 – 559 points, D= 420 – 489 points, F= 0 – 419 points.

OTHER INFORMATION:  Missing an assigned test without a valid excuse will result in a grade of zero on that test.  Guard duty is not a legitimate excuse for missing a test.  It is preferred that you notify me in advance if you must miss a test.  Otherwise contact me before

the next class meeting.  Do not wait until the next time you are in class to discuss a missed test.  Refer to the phone numbers and e-mail addresses listed to reach me.  Make-up tests will not be given but if a student has a valid excuse (as determined by the instructor), the missed test grade may be replaced by an average of all other test scores.  Absences and tardies will be reported daily through CAS.  The Citadel policy pertaining to class attendance will be upheld.

No make-ups on daily grades will be allowed.   Assignments are expected to be completed on time.

No food or drinks (other than water) are allowed in the classroom.

Please do not hesitate to call me at home or e-mail me with your questions and concerns.
